Solvent based printers tend to be more commonly known as ink jet printers. These printers were first developed somewhere around 1950 and by the late 1970’s could print digital images from a computer. Since solvent based printers use solvent inks which are pigments in solvents that dry quickly they are preferred over dyes. Solvent based inks do tend to be cheaper than dyes so it does reduce the cost of printing to some extent. The other reason these printers are commonly used is for the speed at which the ink dries due to the solvents evaporating rapidly leaving the pigments on the printed surface. Some solvent based printers have a drying stage that consists of the printed material being passed under a heat or blower to dry the ink quicker. Please ensure to read all the instructions that come with your printer to ensure that you are purchasing the proper supplies for it as well as to ensure that you are using it correctly.
